Does your site suck?... Well, Does it bring in $$$?... then, Yes, it does sucks I have been making websites since 1996. Like most young nerdy web designers, I though web design was about making the coolest looking most visually impressive sites possible.... I was wrong. It didn’t take long (ok, it did) to realize that a website is no good if it doesn’t bring in the $$$. I also learned that the most visually impressive (animation, sound effects, whatever) site doesn’t always (almost never) do a good job at getting sales. Just think about some of the biggest sites on the Internet today: eBay, Amazon.com, Craig’s List, Google, etc. What do they all have in common? They are ugly... well, at least they are not really pretty. What gets the job done is having good content that is easy to access. Putting flashy animation on your site keeps it from being useable on mobile devices or from being found effectively on search engine. Today, while I still like to make sites look good, I focus on the bottom line (aka $$$). Usability, easy navigation, and easy to update content should never be sacrificed for looks. If your site costs thousands of dollars to update, then you will never update it. If a site does not have regularly updated content, then search engines will pass it by in favor of more active websites. Websites should do two things: Generate Sales or Generate Leads. If your site doesn’t do that then you need a new web designer.
